Dear Atlas,

It’s me, your Dad.

I think a lot about the type of person you’re going to be. Your Mom and I are really curious to see what your personality is like, what foods you’ll like, and what you’ll look like. All of these questions will be answered in time, like a lot of the questions I’m carrying inside my head before you arrive. I wonder what things will be like for me as your Dad.

Dad is a special role that I don’t think gets nearly enough credit. In a world where everybody wants their turn in the “discrimination awareness” spotlight, Dads seem to be so far behind, they don’t even try to make an appearance. More often than not, the Dad is portrayed as a buffoon in TV shows and Hollywood movies.

I would hate for you to spend your whole life with a feeling that your major lot in life is to be the butt of jokes made by your own family. Truth is, Atlas, the role of the Dad is a silent journey. I don’t think most men want accolades, or even recognition, for what they do, at least not as much as the time and space to do it their own way.

I think what I feel most right now is the desire to get things right with you, your Mom, and my own life. It’s difficult for me to feel that way right now, Atlas. Ahead of you being born, I feel like I’m not doing nearly enough in life.

What I do know is that there’s a lot of support in our corner, little guy. Your Mom is incredible, and I know we will be able to work as a family in all that we do: the highs, lows, and everything in between.

I love you,

Dad
